It doesn’t have any desktop environment as the interface is menu driven. It comes in an ISO of 20MB (!!!) which is much lesser in bulk than well-known solutions like Clonezilla (128MB). If you want to donate to this fascinating project, SliTaz has started a fundraiser campaign in 2014. Grab a copy and have fun with a tiny yet fully usable desktop Linux distro! Try it on a VM or from USB or install it on your old rig. SliTaz is traditionally for BIOS but I have published an article recently on how to run it on a UEFI machine. As always, it supports even the oldest i386 hardware. SliTaz has always been more usable than other Linux mini distros (like Tin圜ore Linux) because it ships with the LXDE desktop environment which is very matured. But things are looking brighter now and hopefully version 5.0 is round the corner once RC-1 gets well tested.ĥ.0 RC-1 includes many bug fixes and features a new look. SliTaz 4.0 was released on and development was almost at a standstill for a while. SliTaz is back from its 2+ years old hiatus and announced version 5.0 RC-1 (Release Candidate 1) today. You’ll find the instructions to run from USB in the download page. Another interesting feature of Maui is the ability to rollback to a previous working state, or snapshot. When running on a mobile, you can use applications those can adapt to the screen resolution and are touch enabled. The user interface is responsive, which means it is designed to adapt to the device it is running on. Maui claims to be a dynamic, flicker free and fast system, characteristics which it naturally inherits from Arch. Maui is the first Linux distro to feature Wayland as the default display server. The desktop is minimal and clean and the OS includes the regular Gnome applications. It can be installed and run from a USB pen drive. At the time of writing the ISO is just 287MB in size. Maui is available for 64-bit architecture only which makes sense given the fact that it attempts to be a next generation OS taking advantage of the bleeding-edge technologies in Linuxland. Hawaii uses the much discussed Wayland display server and Qt.
